Should comics and graphic novels be included in English classes? In schools, students mostly read novels in English classes, but they should be able to read comic books too because they can give us the same messages as novels and students can more easily visualize the material. In an anonymous recent survey of BHS students and staff, 80.5% thought comic books and graphic novels should be brought into English classes at school. One person said, “They personify an idea that allows students to identify with a person’s flaws but realize that they can do extraordinary things with the abilities they have.” Not all of the people who took the survey thought comics and graphic novels should be included in English classes. Someone said, “In my opinion, comics do not expand the minds of our students.”

Another person mentioned, “They shape our popular culture, specifically how we view and understand current events. The recent surge of comic books in mainstream pop culture and the correlation to the state of the economy.” Comic books have been getting popular, but they are not recognized enough, and it’s not just in schools.

Throughout the years many comic books have come out. They have been turned into films and televisions shows. Some of these films do not get the chance to win an Oscar, but superhero films should win more awards because they will get people excited about comic books. The Oscars in 2015 only had three superhero films nominated. They were Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and X-Men: Days of Future Past. None of these movies won. Only one superhero film was nominated in 2014; Iron Man 3, and it didn’t win. 82.5% of people who took a survey about this thought more superhero films should win Oscars. 17.5% thought superhero films shouldn’t win any more Oscars.

In the past years many movies featuring  superheros have come out, but not every superhero has its own film. A person said, “A GOOD Green Lantern Film.” A few people said they would like see a movie involving Deadpool. Another person said, said “Solomon Grundy, he was an anti-hero but I would really enjoy seeing him in a movie due to to events that made him who he was.”  When a person sees a superhero that they like in a movie they get excited or when their favorite movie based on a comic gets an award. They will pay more attention to the award show, which is good for television companies. Also, when a teacher mentions a student’s favorite superhero in class. The student might get happy and participate more.

Comic books and graphic novels should be brought to classes. Some students would enjoy this and it would help give students a visualize experience. Also more movies featuring superheroes should win awards. Few of these movies win awards, if any. It would bring a good change to award shows.
