Class of 2024 is putting their hard work into play as they are finally getting ready to press ‘send’ on their college applications. After months of writing essays, brag sheets, requesting letters of recommendation, taking and retaking standardized tests, and so much more, they are finally reaching the finishing line. However, hitting submit does not end the long process.

One of the biggest parts of an application is the essay. It is where colleges get to know the student and why they would like an individual such as themselves at the school. Some of the prompts from Common App include reflecting on a challenge, setback or failure in one’s life, a passion that makes the student lose track of time, discussing an accomplishment and even an option to create your own topic. Many different outlets to let everyone with all different creative lenses to express themselves and their essay topic.

Another very important aspect of college applications is choosing the colleges themselves. Juniors and seniors are racing against the clock to fit in college tours all around the country, fitting their requirements they seek in a school. Big, small, athletics, greek life, student size, weather, major and so much more are all considered when deciding where to apply. Some want to go very far away and some want to stay close to home. The colleges in our nation have an extremely wide variety that can fit the needs of every prospective student. Kayla Najera ‘24 says she “would like to go somewhere up north because [she] likes colder temperatures.” Seniors are narrowing down the different aspects they want for themselves for the next four years.

A negative aspect to college applications, however, is the stress it can bring on. On top of different courses Seniors are already taking, additional essays and work take priority to meet deadlines. Sydney Solomon ‘24 thinks “it’s very overwhelming because there are so many [applications] but at the same time they are very similar so it is repetitive and tiring but also helpful.”

Most Seniors are looking forward to the waiting process, because then, at the very least, everything will be done, submitted, and under review. Jane Lewis ‘24 brings up how “it is nice knowing that most of [her] peers are in the same boat.” Understanding, like Jane said, how new of an experience this is for every Senior gives the stressful process a comforting feel.

With deadlines around the corner, Seniors are adding their final touches and perfecting their applications to make them as ready as possible, hoping to hit send soon by putting their best foot forward and letting their hard work take the wheel.
