Nearly 20 years after the first “The Devil Wears Prada” was released in theaters, it is finally getting a sequel. The original movie, released in 2006, follows a new and up-and-coming journalist, Andy Sachs, played by Anne Hathaway, as she secures a job at a high-end, influential fashion magazine, with her editor-in-chief, Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep, who is notoriously and famously harsh and intimidating.
In the original film, Andy does not have a lot of knowledge about the fashion industry, but she has to quickly learn the ways and adapt to the pressures that come with the industry. She faces high expectations and criticism, especially from her editor-in-chief, Miranda Priestly. As the movie progresses, Miranda transforms Andy’s appearance and her work ethic, which helps her succeed, but she loses her sense of personal values, relationships, and her primary career goals. With this character development from Andy, we see something similar from Miranda Priestly. Although she is harsh, it is revealed that she is just deeply committed and involved with her work and the fashion industry.
“I like the ending scene, I feel like it tied the whole movie together, and it was really entertaining,” Caroline Adams ‘28 says about “The Devil Wears Prada.” With a 7/10 rating on IMDb and a 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, many fans and critics feel the same way about the first movie
With rumors flying about this sequel for months, the official trailer dropped on February 1st of this year. The sequel is set to premiere on May 1st, 2026, in theaters. With this highly anticipated film, fans are eager to see how the storyline continues and how it will evolve from the first movie. Curiosity also follows how the movie’s setting could be shaped by modern fashion trends and modern technology, such as social media.
In the official trailer, Andy is seen returning to her old company, Runway, after leaving at the end of the first movie. In the clip, it also appears that Andy is the new editor of Runway, marking her spot in the company and fashion world. Following the official trailer, the final trailer was released on April 6th of this year. In this last trailer, it is revealed that Runway magazine is in a scandal, and Andy is going to have to help them get out of this mysterious scandal. With new characters who appear in the trailers, anticipation has grown.
With fashion playing a huge role in the first film, many believe that the sequel could follow how fashion has changed over the past 20 years.
Angel Jobiese says, “I think that the fashion will follow today’s trends in the new sequel”. With this growing expectation, many want the film to incorporate modern styles and trends influenced by social media, unlike the original film, which mainly focused on magazine influence and styles in the mid-2000s.
“The Devil Wears Prada 2” has built huge anticipation for its seemingly new and unique storyline, which will continue Andy’s story. The film also has the potential to connect with a newer generation of audiences and fans, as well as fans of the original movie.
