The fall play at Bernards High School has been an opportunity for many students to express their creativity and artistic interest in acting and being on a stage. These students spend months preparing a show for their parents and friends, working together to tell a story that has been told many times, but with the freedom to express themselves.
Daniel Christie, a senior at Bernards High School, is the only senior actor in this year’s play, although there are a bunch of hard-working Bernards seniors in the crew. This year’s fall play is Arsenic and Old Lace! Daniel has demonstrated a strong interest in acting and theater since he was in elementary school. Participating and playing a part in the play at Bernard’s middle school when he was in 8th grade. He also played Warner in the production of Legally Blonde in last year’s school musical, continuing the care he has for Bernard’s school productions.
Daniel’s interest in the fall play stems from his insight into past seniors and their own journey to success in the play. The dedication past seniors had inspired Daniel, and he hopes to do the same this year amongst the freshmen and sophomores. “I almost didn’t do the play this year because I was the only senior, and I was worrying about college applications…….because of that, I almost didn’t do it, but then I remembered the contribution that seniors made in the past. They’ve had it a lot worse than me, so I put my best foot forward, and I really don’t regret it.” Daniels’ constant dedication to the school play is inspiring other Bernards students to have the courage to express their creativity and interest in acting, as the play is time-consuming and a challenge to those participating.
Daniel’s sister Penelope (‘28) is also participating in this year’s show. “It’s fun working with her, and I think this is the last time I will ever be on stage with her. So I am trying to make that meaningful as well.” These moments are ones that are to be cherished, and Daniel’s dedication to his family as well as his craft sets the standard for a true Bernardian. Daniel’s love for musical theater set an example for the lower-classmen, and there’s hope to see his sister make those strides as well.
It’s so exciting to see Daniel finish out his career at Bernards, and there’s hope that wherever he ends up after this year, he will carry and continue his interest in theater. Thank you, Daniel, for being a part of the Bernards fall play family, showing dedication and pure love for your craft, and we are so excited to see you perform on the Bernards stage for your last performance!
