BHS seniors to perform in their final musical: “The Wizard of Oz”
Following last year’s spectacular rendition of the Broadway musical, “Legally Blonde,” the Bernards High School performing arts program will be performing “The Wizard of Oz” this upcoming March. The cast and crew have been working tirelessly since the beginning of January to put together a great show. Leading the charge in this years’ musical are seniors, Alexis Slydowski, Julia Schmidt, Eva Fernandez, Jonas Apostlakos, and Abigail Freire. As these tremendous seniors embark on their final BHS production, we take the time to acknowledge all that they have done, and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.
Aside from being a standout varsity athlete in both field hockey and lacrosse, Alexis also participates in the school musical. Since joining the program her freshman year, Alexis quickly made an impact on the theater art’s program. Alexis’s previous roles include, Ensemble in the 25th annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Mrs. Potiphar in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor DreamCoat, Brooke Wyndham in Legally Blonde, and Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. While Alexis has had very notable parts in all of her previous shows, this year’s role may just take cake. Alexis is set to play Dorothy in the upcoming production of “The Wizard of Oz.” Across all of her years in the theater program, Alexis recounts her fondest musical memories, “ My best memory from the BHS performing arts program is after every Saturday tech rehearsal and show we always go out to the diner for dinner together and it’s always a good time.” Good luck to Alexis as she prepares for her final, and possibly most memorable performance.
Julia has been performing in theatrical productions since the age of three, and BHS musicals since her freshman year. Throughout her time at the high school, Julia’s parts include, ensemble in “Joseph” and “Spelling Bee,” Paulette in “Legally Blonde,” and the Wicked Witch in the upcoming production of the “Wizard of Oz.” Since joining the program, Julia’s best memory has been, “Sharing the stage with [her] dog, Phoebe, last year in Legally Blonde. It was never something I ever thought would happen, and it made for some pretty hilarious moments on and off stage.” While Julia’s time with the BHS theater production is coming to an end, she plans on continuing her career by, “getting [her] BFA in acting or musical theatre and then pursuing theater professionally.” Good luck to Julia in “The Wizard of Oz,” and all of her future endeavors.
Upon joining the BHS theater program her sophomore year, Eva quickly fell in love with everything the program had to offer. “Since joining my sophomore year I have been in the ensemble, and played multiple characters in each show.” Eva’s willingness to contribute to the productions in any way she can is what makes saying goodbye to her so difficult. Eva encourages her fellow BHS students to join the musical, stating, “You will always end up having at least a little bit of fun. I almost didn’t do the musical this year, but with some convincing I ended up joining and I believe it was the right choice. There’s a lot to look forward to, fun conversations and silly moments during practice, that make the whole experience better.” Good luck to Eva as she prepared for “The Wizard of Oz.”
Abigail has been participating in both plays and musicals at BHS since her sophomore year. Over the past three years, she has accumulated numerous roles including, Ensemble in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, ensemble and Courtney the Saleswomen in Legally Blonde, and as ensemble in The Wizard of Oz. [She was] also part of the tech crew for Lend Me a Tenor, Rumors, and Arsenic and Old Lace, being co-Prop Manager [her] Senior year. Across all her different shows she has been in, Abigail’s best memory has been, “Participating in stage crew for the play in my Sophomore year, watching the seniors at the time perform and seeing the process to put on a show.” After high school, Abigail is hoping to continue her theatrical career as it is something that she “Deeply enjoys and wants to keep pursuing, even casually.” Abigail encourages her fellow students to join the program, saying, “I would recommend you to take part because of the connections you make with your cast, but also because performing for an audience is one of the most fulfilling moments I’ve ever experienced. There’s a thrill from making an audience feel something that you can’t find anywhere else.”Good luck to Abigail in “The Wizard of Oz,” and good luck to her in all her
