This year’s Bernards’ Girls Basketball team are looking to improve their record and game tactics from last year. Bernards finished last season with a record of 20-7. In the Skyland Conference, their regular season games are against Bound Brook, Belvidere, South Hunterdon, Manville, and North Plainfield. Last season Bernards beat all of the teams in their conference, and they will be looking to do the same thing this season.

The team is a lot different this year because several seniors from last year’s team graduated, with new freshmen, and incoming JV players.

Coach Sandy Whelan said, “I am excited about the incoming freshman class, they are a very talented group. I think it’s too early to tell what their impact will be, I need to see them in practices and scrimmages to really assess. They should have a very successful four years here at Bernards if they continue to work hard.”

Along with a lot of the other teams at Bernards, girls basketball have high hopes for this season. “My goal is to blend our older and more experienced players with the younger players who I think have an impact,” coach Whelan said. “Also as always we try our best to make it a positive experience for everyone in the program. We take pride in our team approach and making you feel like family.”
Bernards is looking to change it up this year in terms of trying new defensive tactics and playing at a faster tempo, so that the other team won’t expect any of it in the game. Approaching the beginning of the season every girl is excited to play, especially senior Sara Whelan. “I am super excited for this year’s basketball season,” she said. “I can’t wait to spend my last year with my closest friends and teammates. We have so much fun together and it’s just like one big happy family. We are going to be pretty good too, so that makes it even better. I’m sad it’s my last year but I can’t wait to make it the best season ever.” The team kicks off their first home game on November 23 against Montville at 4.
