Relentless. Starting 10-0 on the season, their best start to a season in at least 15 years, the Girls Basketball squad has been nothing but relentless. With their 10-0 start including an overtime comeback win over Voorhees and a buzzer-beating win over Somerville, it is safe to say that this team is full of fight. The team is led by Catholic University commit Aletha Reynolds ‘26, who is averaging nearly a double double with 14.6 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.
In his sixth season as head coach, Brett Bisconti is looking for his fourth straight season at a .500 record and above. Coach Bisconti says, “They work so hard and believe they can compete with anyone. They are motivated and play for each other and are willing to do whatever it takes to win.”
The main focal point for the team this year has been the defense: “We focus heavily on the defensive side of the ball and have really bought in on ensuring our defense shows up every game,” says Coach Bisconti. This defensive intensity is evident in their performance as opposing offenses only score 34 points per game.
Besides Reynolds, the team is powered by Jasmine Kelleher ‘27, Maddie Frame ‘27, and Jane Freisen ‘29 who each lead the team with their respective strengths. Kelleher can shoot it from deep, with 16 threes on the season including a game-winning buzzer beater in the game against Somerville. Frame is the leader in terms of passing, racking up 22 assists on the year. Freshman Jane Freisen does a little bit of everything down low for the Mountaineers, averaging eight points and six rebounds per game.
In the wake of a program-record 23 win season last year, this year’s team is building on those same characteristics. Coach Bisconti says, “They are experienced, confident, and play for each other. From a culture standpoint, they are the product of the culture that the current team and last year’s team have put in place and will continue to instill.”
Aletha Reynolds concurs, stating “Everyone this year is committed and ready for every game and never gives up during play. With 2 big end of game wins, our team is ready to handle any challenge and adversity.”
After each game, the team awards a stuffed animal gorilla to the “savage of the game”. It is awarded to the player who makes game-changing plays and gives full effort throughout the contest and is picked by the previous games’ winner.
Looking ahead, the team has tough challenges coming up including back-to-back games against rivals Voorhees and Ridge. Their next home game will be Saturday, January 17th against Roselle Park.
