Spring Sports Preview: Boys Tennis

The BHS boys’ tennis team will be playing against Rutgers Prep on March 20. For the last couple of years, the team has continued to work hard, and last year the tennis team ended with twenty wins and only four loses. Everyone on the teams hopes that they can maintain their record after losing valuable players to graduation last year.

Mrs. McMillan, an English teacher at Bernards Middle School, coaches the boys’ tennis team. This is her second year coaching them, but her first as head coach. Mr. Koch, a T&R teacher at the high school will make his team debut as an assistant coach.

The coaches have been preparing hard for this season in several ways. The team has a bigger tennis court this year. “Our makeshift indoor space has already produced ‘fruit’: a newfound appreciation for a REAL tennis court,” Coach McMillan said. “Sharing tight quarters has generated solidarity. We’re going to train hard everyday, and pretend tomorrow is the state finals match.”

Each player works hard, but some work harder than others. Mrs. McMillan and Mr. Koch said senior Teddy Apt is the team’s star player. “Boys’ tennis is a veritable ‘constellation’ of star athletes,” said Coach McMillan. “Picking just one star would be misleading… However, two of BHS’ top dogs are seniors Ted Apt and Chris Shaw.”

Teddy Apt has been on the team for the last four years. He said he will improve this season by “Winning counties, going undefeated the whole season, and then winning states. It is a lot to hope for to be undefeated the whole season, but hopefully Teddy can rise to the challenge. He said his goals are “Defeating all opponents placed in my way and never looking back.” Lastly Teddy stated he is most excited for “the Atterporty, once we dominate in state’s.”
The boys’ tennis team will continue to try their best this season. Mrs. McMillan stated, “I’m looking forward to the team’s winning as many decisive tie-breakers in close matches as possible!”
