With 450 episodes, twenty-two seasons, and countless iconic scenes, Grey’s Anatomy proves that it is in it for the long haul. As the twenty-second season premiered in early 2026, Grey’s Anatomy has been airing for over two decades, even though its peak ended about ten years ago. The medical drama has been consistently releasing new seasons since March of 2005.

The screenwriter, producer, and author, Shonda Rhimes, is not only the heart and soul to this show, but every organ and cell, and vital body part that is needed for survival.

However, nobody lives forever, and neither do shows or movies. Although the drama can be extremely hard to resist watching, there comes a time when the show starts to lose its spark. The loss of spark does not just resonate with Grey’s Anatomy but many other hit entertainment series and movie franchises such as Fast & Furious, Mission Impossible, Law & Order SVU, 13 Reasons Why, Good Girls, etc. Over time, the audience either loses interest due to the loss of characters, lack of attraction, or loss of overall enjoyment.

TV shows and movies are a place for some to ‘escape reality’ or see things from other perspectives. However, there comes a time when watching a show or movie is not an ‘escape’, but more of a burden of a commitment.

Elizabeth Sugarmann ‘28 says, “I think that companies are just trying to keep making money on something profitable, so they will keep extending episodes. It definitely has ruined certain shows for me.”

Grey’s Anatomy has impacted some who have watched the show, but there comes a time when this impact stays, but the desire to continue watching stops. That happens around the time when most, if not all, of the original cast leaves or gets killed off. Fans of anything, Grey’s Anatomy or any show, feel that if the reason they are watching the show dies or gets replaced, or the overall plot changes, there is a lack of interest to continue watching.

Writers, directors, and creators, such as Shonda Rhimes, create hit pieces of entertainment because they want their audience to relate to the characters and plot, to get inspired to learn or achieve something, or to possibly educate their viewers on a certain topic that is not entirely known or universally talked about.

Lauren Heyer ‘28 said, “I think some can be meaningful messages, but most of them I feel like [are] just for entertainment purposes and aren’t like actual real life.”

People are not fans of a show or movie because it was good; fans usually have a reason why they associate with the show or movie. Grey’s Anatomy had an amazing cast for the first few seasons, until the main characters started getting killed off or their actors left. The show is solely based on Meredith Grey, hence the name ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, who is played by Ellen Pompeo. Her final season on the show was season nineteen, which was released in 2023. Now that the show is on season twenty-two, with no original cast but Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), the show is not as enjoyable as it was with McDreamy/Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), and Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) along with other impactful characters that molded the meaningful connections that fans of the show did not just fall in love with, but also resonated with.

Grey’s Anatomy has taught its viewers many lessons over the years, medically and non-medically speaking, but there comes a point and time when the once meaningful lessons that touched their fans no longer resonate with their original love for the show. Viewing numbers start to decline, and when that time comes, a finale has the chance to capture their audience one last time. While preserving the heartfelt scenes and moments that fabricated symbolic phrases, relationships, and iconic characters that will have the chance to impact new generations to come!
