It’s been long awaited, but the second part to the Avatar franchise will hit theaters on December 16, 2022. “Avatar: The Way of Water” has fans pleasantly surprised, as it will be the kickstart to a continuation of sequels every other year until “Avatar 5” is released in December, 2025. The cast of the original “Avatar” have committed themselves to their roles in a sequence of films to come, with surprise guests included as well.

So what will the new Avatar be about? The new synopsis that has been newly announced reveals that protagonist, Jake Sully, lives with his family on the planet of Pandora. Without divulging too much information, when a familiar threat sparks intuition and comes to finish what it first started, Jake and his family must be prepared to protect what is theirs. The sequences are truly unique because even though each movie correlates to the other, an autonomous story will materialize in each specific film.

As eagerly anticipated as it is, many have wondered “why the delays?” Maybe it’s due to the rigorous plot or the lingering challenges caused by COVID-19. Yet head director James Cameron connects the delay to the complex and intricate writing process. Regardless of the chatter, it’s been 13 years since the first masterpiece hit the screens, and the pressure has surfaced. Cameron discloses that the sequels have been taking up a lot of time for the technological advancements required to bring the story to its fullest potential. It is important to note that “Avatar 2” was supposed to be released in 2014, so that gives to the extent of technology and work not only the director has put into this movie, but everyone involved as well.

Arguably the most spectacular thing about these movies is the setting. With that being said, the official twitter accounts pertaining to this work promises the setting will return and with advancements. One twitter post explains “In the #Avatar sequels, you won’t just return to Pandora — you’ll explore new parts of the world.” Additionally, Cameron has reported to return to underwater CGI, which has never been done to this measure before. The setting will not only connect back to the original movie, but relate to the thematic elements of the story alluding to family.

Many have wondered about the titles for the rest of the four remaining sequels. As mentioned above, “Avatar 2” is “Avatar: The Way of Water,” then Avatar: The Seed Bearer, next Avatar: The Tulkun Rider, and lastly Avatar 5; Avatar: The Quest for Eywa. However, the release dates nor the titles have been confirmed. In addition to the questions surrounding the films, fans have also been speculating how popular and successful they will be. The first Avatar became the highest-grossing film of all time and the fastest movie to grow from $1 billion through to $2.5 billion. The promotion has definitely benefited the increasing attraction, but directors and cast members still worry about the success of the film, since Avatar 1 did so well.

Needless to say, Avatar is quick on its way and has excited those all around the world. With the large, creative team behind it, nothing but curiosity and astounding things are to come. Make sure to head to theaters on December 16, 2022!
