The boys tennis team is off to a strong beginning of their season with a record of 6-3 and a 3-0 record in the Skyland Valley Division. In their most recent match on April 21 against Philipsburg the team had a 4-1 win. The team has won against Vorhees, Bound Brook, Summit, Warren Hills, and Somerville as well. The boys lost 3-2 to both Mendam and Bridgewater- Raritan, and 5-0 against Hillsborough. However, Coach McMilan states, “Two of those three losses were winnable, and losing those two close matches against West Morris Mendham and Bridgewater-Raritan really hurt. The third loss versus Hillsborough was 5-0, a score that would seem to indicate a blowout, yet it wasn’t.”

The team has three seniors; Chris Sun, Dorek Ozel, and Drew Elliot. All three are returning members and are captains of this year’s team. The rest of the team is a majority of underclassmen however it does not seem to be a problem. “The future does indeed look bright for Bernards Tennis with so many frosh and sophomores on the roster. Many of these underclassmen are splendid scholar-athletes who participate in other sports at the varsity and/or level” says Coach McMillan.

The next home match for the team will be on May 10th against Franklin. In the past few years, the team has won 5-0 against them. The next away game will be May 3rd against Ridge. This will be a new opponent for the team.

With lots of talent, the team looks as if they will be successful this year in the state tournament, as well as in the next few seasons. Senior captain Chris Sun says, “With many talented underclassmen, I see us doing very well in the SCIAA Tournament.” Along with the talented players, Coach McMillans dedication to the team has shown nothing but success.
