January 5th, 2020 marked the date of the 76th Golden Globe Award ceremony. The awards were bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) for contestants, recognizing excellence in the television and film industry. NBC and the HFPA announced the date back in mid-March according to The Hollywood Reporter. As it has the last two years, the ceremony was aired on the first Sunday of the new year.

On December 9th, 2019 the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced the nominees from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. Barry Adelman, the executive producer and executive VP of Television at Dick Clark productions announced the nominees in 25 categories spanning between motion pictures and television. These categories include the best motion picture, best performance by an actor/actress in a motion picture, best actor in a supporting role, best director, best screenplay, and best television show just to name a few.

The Golden Globes is often considered the start of the winter award season, which is followed by the Oscars, also known as the Academy Awards, which will premiere on February 6th. However, there are some significant differences between the two. The Golden Globes recognizes excellence in both film and television while the Academy awards have a much more narrow scope, with only films eligible for awards. The Golden Globes feature a total of 25 awards\; 14 for films and 11 for television.

Ricky Jervais speech was the highlight of this year’s show. Senior Kieran Kelly said “After watching Ricky Jervais speech at the award ceremony, I wonder about the exact number of celebrities upset with him.”

The moods are somewhat different between the two as well, with the Golden Globes being more of a party while the Academies is a straight-laced affair. More significantly, the Golden Globes is the only award ceremony to serve alcohol leading to some unscripted moments during the event.

The Golden Globes have always been a bit of a curveball in how the event is structured and awards are given out. For one, the HFPA only consists of a little over 100 members leading to much more scrutiny because of such little voters, while the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have over 8000 voting members and many are prominent members in Hollywood Guilds according to an article written by CNN.

Ms Acuff said, “Frankly, im tired of the awards shows.”

That being said, winners consist of Ramy Youseff in “Ramy” and Phoebe Waller-Bridge in “Fleabag” for best performance by an actor and actress in a television series in the musical or comedy category. For best pest performance by an actor and actress in a television series in the drama category was Brian Cox in “Succession” and Olivia Goldman in “The Crown” just to name a few.

For best Television limited series or motion picture made for television, “Chernobyl” was declared the winner. For the best motion picture in the comedy or musical category, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” won. For drama, “1917” was the conclusive winner.

Despite the flack that the Golden Globes receives, 2020’s feature was received generally well with many noteworthy nominees and victors.
