On March 6, students and teachers will take part in the school’s very first Wellness Day, a half-day event designed to promote mental and physical well-being. The idea was first introduced by school president Jack Rutz 26’ during his election speech and has now become a reality thanks to the efforts of the 2025–2026 Student Council.

Wellness Day was created to give students a break from their rigorous academic schedules while also encouraging healthy habits and self-care. Instead of traditional classes, each department has been assigned a specific wellness activity that teachers can choose to participate in. This flexible structure allows staff members to select activities that best fit their interests, creating a personalized and relaxing experience for everyone involved.

To add excitement to the day, six raffle prizes will be awarded at the end of each period. These prizes were made possible through generous donations from community partners, corresponding secretary Ella Patel 26’  shares, “We’ve had a lot of generous donations including an Ulta beauty basket, YMCA three-month membership, J Walker massage and facial, Quantum Wellness sauna and float session, and Guallapas Green Bato Juice Bar, which makes Wellness Day all the more exciting!”

Student response to Wellness Day has already been positive. Maggie Calpin ’28 said, “I think that a wellness day would be really great for students as we have extremely long school days and sometimes it’s good to have a break.” Sonny Liranzo ’26 added, “Wellness days being incorporated into our school year allow us to have a much-needed break from the pressure of schoolwork.” Student council member Andrew Tropp 26’  also emphasized the importance of creating space for students to recharge and focus on their well-being.

Beyond the activities and raffles, Wellness Day represents a larger shift toward prioritizing mental health within the school community. With demanding schedules, heavy workloads, and extracurricular commitments, students often have limited opportunities to slow down. This event encourages students to step away from academic pressures, reconnect with classmates, and participate in activities that support relaxation and mindfulness.

As the first Wellness Day at the school, organizers hope this event will set a positive model for future years. President Jack Rutz shares “This day will bring the school together and hopefully continue to grow through the next years.” By recognizing the importance of balance between academics and personal wellness, Student Council aims to foster a healthier school environment where students feel supported both inside and outside the classroom.
