Bernardsville hosted its annual tree lighting ceremony on December 6th in Olcott Square. Held by the Bernardsville Chamber of Commerce, the event is mainly known for its lighting of the tree but includes other activities such as an opportunity to meet Frosty the Snowman, the chance to take a photo with Santa in front of the tree, and Mr. and Mrs. Claus arriving at the event by fire truck. This gathering is a great opportunity to spend time with loved ones and spread the holiday cheer.
For some, the holiday season officially begins in Bernardsville with this tradition. It is a beloved custom that many people take part in every year. The whole community gathers together for a fun night full of laughter, cheer, and happiness. The event transforms Olcott Square into a joyous winter scene and serves as a kick-off for the holiday season.
The cold air, the bustling crowd, and the festive decorations make it a wonderful atmosphere. It is a perfect place to feel the magic of the holidays and adds to the festive spirit in Bernardsville. “The experience of [witnessing] the lighting of the Christmas tree is a magical experience,” says Maggie O’Donnell ‘28.
Many spend their nights at the annual celebration, making memories with their loved ones, taking pictures, and just bringing their festive spirit. “I just love the extreme and extravagant Christmas cheer that everyone brings,” O’Donnell ‘28 states when asked to describe the environment of the festival.
There is also food and drinks served. Eila Moran ‘28 states that “they serve really good hot chocolate.” Additionally, the event also features the Holiday carolers, who will be singing songs at the event. Moran ‘28 mentions that the “carolers are really festive, which adds to the spirit of the night.”
Following the tree lighting ceremony was the holiday parade, which took its route from Olcott Square to Bernards High School. Parade-goers enjoyed a performance from the Somerville School of Rock and a bake sale that supported the Bernards High Baseball team.
Bernardsville’s annual Christmas tree lighting tradition is a memorable one, each year being better than the last. Families get to dedicate one night to celebrating the Christmas spirit, and they do it with their friends and family, which makes the event all the more unforgettable. The event celebrates the holidays in many different ways, from Christmas carolers to meeting Mr. and Mrs. Claus. For those who enjoy the holiday season and like being surrounded by the Christmas spirit, Olcott Square is the place to be.
