The 96th Academy Awards took place on March 10th, 2024. It brought fashion on the red carpet, emotional acceptance speeches, and celebrated the best in the film industry. Many famous faces walked the carpet that night and received a lot of feedback on their good and bad looks.

As usual, celebrities came in their best glamor to rock the red carpet. Some of the best-received looks were America Ferrera, Emma Stone, and Colman Domingo. Emma Stone grabbed a lot of attention in her dress made by Louis Vuitton– a light green gown topped with a diamond necklace. America Ferrera was wearing a sparkly pink gown made by Versace. She came to represent her most recent movie, Barbie. Colam Domingo carried his legacy of best-dressed man at the Oscars, in his Louis Vuitton gold detailed, black suit.

Oppenheimer won big that night, gaining 13 nominations, and earning awards in categories including Best Director, Best Actor, and even Best Picture. Best Actor went to Cillian Murphy, thanks to his starring role in Oppenheimer. Following this big win, Best Director was awarded to Christopher Nolan, director of Oppenheimer. This was not all for the movie, however, as it proceeded to win Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Score, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Picture.

James Gallagher ‘27 shares, “Oppenheimer was a great movie, since it was very historically accurate and had a great cast, I think it definitely deserved all the awards.” Oppenheimer was liked by many and gained a lot of publicity when it was released, so it was no surprise it went home with 7 different awards.

Other big winners included Emma Stone and Da’Vine Joy Randolph. Emma Stone took home Best Actress after starring in the movie Poor Things. Da’Vine Joy Randolph was awarded Best Supporting Actress and shared a very emotional speech. In Randolph’s speech after receiving her award, she said, “For so long I have wanted to be different and now I realize I just need to be myself, and I thank you for seeing me.” Stone and Randolph both took home big awards for the women that night.

These popular movies and actors from this year took home many great awards. However, to most people’s surprise, the new Barbie movie which gained much attention this year only brought home one award. Many were expecting Margot Robbie who played Barbie, Greta Gerwig the director, and more to be up for awards, but they were not. The only award Barbie brought home that night was Best Original Song, for “What Was I Made For” by Billie Eilish.

Elana Babich ‘27 said, “I thought Barbie deserved more nominations this year especially for Margot Robbie and the director after all the support it got this year.” Despite this surprise for many, the Oscars 2024 was overall a great success and brought many great awards to new actors and movies.
