Homecoming, a highschool staple, will return to Bernards for a third straight year on Saturday, October 25th. This year’s homecoming dance was planned by the student council, with them deciding between three themes. These themes included starry night, under the sea, disco fever, and the great gatsby. It was eventually decided that the Great Gatsby would be the theme, as released by the student council in a video on instagram. Juliette Maro ‘26 shares that “[she] loves the movie and [is] very happy with the theme that has been picked.”

Leading up to the homecoming dance, the student council planned other activities throughout the week to promote school spirit. Monday is pajama day for everyone at BHS, where the students will rock their best outfits for going to bed. Tuesday will be known as “Twin Tuesday”, with the goal to have students “twin” or wear the same outfit as someone else. Wacky Wednesday is a day where students should wear a crazy hat, make their hair look wild, mismatch their socks, etc. Thursday is Secret Service day, with students dressing up as secret service people in trenchcoats and sunglasses. Friday, the day of the pep rally, students will wear apparel for the school, wearing red or any other type of Bernards spiritwear.

On Friday October 24th, the Bernards Mountaineers football team will play their red sea game against Carteret. This game is also their senior night, where 23 senior football players will be recognized. The pep rally consists of various activities, with each of the fall sports teams taking part, and randomly selected students. Jack Martin ‘27 says, “I’m really excited for the pep rally, they’ve been very fun and entertaining in year’s past and I hope the same for this year.”

The rally will start with the cheerleaders performing, getting the rally started and pumping up the crowd. Then, there will be competitions between the sports including bubble soccer between girls and boys soccer. There will also be red light green light between the girls tennis, field hockey, and volleyball teams. Girls and boys cross country will be facing off in wheelbarrow races to see which squad has the best combination of upper/lower body strength.

As for the competitions between the other students, there will be Sing or Splat, which involves students being “pied” in the face with shaving cream if they sing the incorrect song lyric. There is another “pizza box” event, with students and volunteer teachers holding pizza boxes in their hands, with the goal of knocking the boxes out of each other’s hands in a limited area.

The dance will officially start at 7pm, with students able to enter until 8pm and the dance ending at 10pm. As for the decorations, it will be Great Gatsby themed, with a gold and black balloon arch as a part of a photo booth and DJ for the music.

As spirit week and homecoming approaches, BHS students will be full of school spirit and enjoying one of the most iconic weeks at BHS.
