
Fall sports begin seasons with much excitement and anticipation

The Mountaineers have started this football season off strong. They have triumphed in all 4 of their games so far this year. Their latest triumph included a 39-0 blowout win over JP Stevens. Other successful games include an opening week victory over Cranford (27-15), a win over Hillside (24-14), and divisional victories vs. Delaware Valley (43-7) and Voorhees (31-21). The Mountaineers have clinched the divisional title again this year. Star players for this top-form team includes, Ricky giebiel ‘26, who has provided two touchdowns in 2025. Nolan Walsh ‘27 also has a total of 12 touchdowns to his name, as a breakout game against Cranford, he threw for four. The junior has had an amazing start to the season as he has 40 completions, and a total of 556 total passing yards in five games. Another standout player is Logan Stevens ‘26 who has contributed 57 total carries along with 7 total touchdowns. According to Head coach Jon Simoneau, “Our senior linemen Justin Simpson, James Renz, and Finn Osborne. They keep our QB Nolan Walsh protected, while providing big holes for our running backs like Logan Stevens. They are all multi year starters and kind of the unsung heroes of our success. Without them we would not be where we are.” Regarding the unbeaten streak,Coach Simoneau told us, “As a coach it isn’t so much the undefeated feeling that gets you, it’s more feeling the pride in the team from the school and town community.” The boys hope to keep the winning streak up and go as far as possible this season.

The boys soccer team always has high expectations at Bernard’s and this year is no different. Coach Laspada keeps telling the team that this may be one of the best groups he’s coached. This year’s team has a lot of returning faces like Samuel Rios 26’, Jaykob Marquez 26’, and Tim Koke 26’ who are the team captains. Along with the captains, many other seniors this year have played a big role for the team. Multiple new faces have appeared on the team as well and a very strong sophomore group has contributed a few goals in key victories. Adding on to the boys success, The girls “reloading season” has also started well as their record stands out at 5-3 with 7 games left in the season. Victories include an 8-0 win over Warren Hills, 6-0 and 4-0 wins over Delaware Valley, a 2-0 triumph over Somerville, and a 3-1 victory against Gil St. Bernards.

The Girls Varsity Field hockey team has opened their season with a record of 2-4. Their 20 game season has started with narrow losses and great wins. Their first matches have included an opening week win against Somerville 2-0, a 4-1 loss against Ridge. a 1-0 defeat to Delaware Valley, followed by a crushing, 7-1 win over Franklin. Belvidere and South Hunterdon were the next to fly between the girls’ defense. As they approach just under 15 games left they hold with a 4-5 record. Star players include Brooke Helpinstill ‘26, who has started this season with 5 combined goals and assists. Another top player has proven to be Gabby Mongo ‘26, with a combined 7 total goals and assists. The goalie, Kaia Alexander has also proven to be key, with a total of 29 total saves for the team this season so far.

This year’s tennis team has so far started with a 1-8 record. The Tennis team has faced Bridgewater Raritan and Montgomery most recently. This season began with a successful 3-2 win over Somerville. A hard fought season is still not to be finished as they have 4 games spanned until mid October. The girls star players include Elizabeth Chen ‘26, who has a personal record of 7-2. Her amazing season has only been stalled by narrow losses to oppositions from pingry school and Ridge. Every other match Chen has played has ended in triumph. Another important piece of the team is Claire Ren ‘26, who has maintained an impressive 6-3 record. Narrow losses have also been to pingry school and Ridge with the addition of Montgomery, but she has defeated Watchung Hills, Somerville, Hillsborough, Madison, and Bridgewater-Raritan. The tennis team still holds their hopes high and will continue to make matches interesting.

The Bernard’s cross country team has been performing very well and has upheld its good reputation around the area. They’ve held top places at all of their meets and at their first meet Brody Watt ‘26took first place in the Men’s race by almost 10 seconds and broke the course record. Julian Bonk ‘26 has also impressed this season, notching a time of 17:20 on an extremely difficult Bowdoin course. On the girls side Fiona Dougherty ‘27 has led the charge, she scored a time of 21:38 at Bowdoin. The girls team is a lot smaller in size, but a talented roster has helped them compete.
