Spring is upon us, as are spring sports. Baseball and softball return after a year long hiatus due to COVID-19. The teams are starting to get back into the swing of things, and so far things have been going well.

When asked how he thought it was going so far, Coach Falzarano said, “Although short, it has gone well. That is one of the critical changes – everything with our preseason has been compressed.”

Led by Andrew Holmes, who in 2019 had a 2.98 ERA in 27.2 innings, he is just one of seven returning seniors. One of the returning seniors, Griffin Beers, was asked how he felt going into the season after not playing since 2019.

“It was tough not being able to play last season and missing out on having a great year, but it makes this year so much more special. The group of guys we have this year are all great players and people and I couldn’t ask for a better group to go out onto the field with senior year. This year we’re playing for the team that couldn’t play last year and I couldn’t have asked for a better group of guys to do it with.”

As for the softball team, they too are returning to the field after a lost season due to COVID. Sierra Emery is the only returning senior on the roster, but that doesn’t bother her She’ll be looked up to as a leader on this year’s roster. She was also asked how she felt going into the year having lost a season.

I actually feel pretty good. I thankfully was able to continue to play and train on my showcase softball team over the summer and through the fall/winter season. On top of that, our team had the opportunity to start working together in winter workouts prior to our season starting, allowing us the time to get to know one another, train hard and get back to softball basics for the year. Overall, I feel very comfortable and excited for this season even though we missed last season because the training has thankfully been the same. So, while I was devastated losing the opportunity to play with the girls on my team last year, I am beyond grateful and blessed that we have the opportunity to play this year.”

However, in an unusual year such as this, there is always going to be a concern about COVID. Coach Falzarano said he is “confident that our season will not be affected too much.”

Emery said this of the restrictions in place “Some precautions have included starting a month later than usual, wearing a mask, and not being able to meet in the locker room before a game or practice. Thankfully, not much has changed, and being able to still play is such a blessing.”

Beers said “ Baseball is already a very spaced out sport so the Precautions we’ve taken haven’t changed the game at all. If anything it feels normal to play just like any other year. Besides wearing masks in the dugout I barely realize that we’re playing in a Pandemic. All I can hope for is that everyone continues to stay safe and we can finish out the season on a great run.”

In an odd year like this, we wish both teams much success and good luck throughout the season
