Senior leadership leads Tennis into 2016 season

With the Spring tennis season in full swing, the players of the ATP Tour are preparing for the upcoming tournaments this year. However, most of the top ranked players participated in both Indian Wells and the Miami Open.

Novak Djokovic broke another record when he won the title, as he now holds the record for the most prize money awarded.

On the women’s side, Victoria Azarenka beat Svetlana Kuznetsova, which allowed her to to win both Indian Wells and Miami back to back.

Switching to the Bernards Boys Tennis season, the team is looking to rebuild after graduating 5 seniors last year. Senior Steven Sewell is the captain this year, and he also plays first singles. Junior R.J Goldberg is playing second singles, and Freshman Jacob Sugarmann is playing third singles.

Junior Abishek Cheriath and senior Joe Robinson are playing 1st doubles, and Senior Dan Stevenson, and Marshall Hespe are playing second doubles. The squad has a difficult schedule this year, playing Chatham, Summit, and Rutgers Prep.

The season opener was on Friday, April 1st, against Rutgers Prep. Captain Steven Sewell lost in an extremely close 3 set match, losing in a tiebreaker. Junior and second singles player R.J Goldberg also went to three sets, and barely lost in the third.

On Tuesday, April 5th, the tennis team endured a tough loss to Gill St Bernard’s, losing 0-5. Recouping from their loss the day before, the team pulled through Warren Hills Regional on Wednesday April 6th, winning 3-2. Stephen Sewell and Jacob Sugarmann won in singles, with R.J. Goldberg going to three sets. Joe Robinson and Ben Wolf won in straight sets.

The team continued to struggle for the next few games, losing to Chatham, Rutgers Prep, and Somerville. The team won against Morris Hills on April 14th, with Freshman Jacob Sugarmann coming back and winning the third match for the team. Abishek Cheriath and Joe Robinson won playing 1st Doubles, while Dan Stephenson and Marshall Hespe won playing second doubles.

At the time of print, the tennis team is scheduled to play rival Gill St. Bernards, and Warren Hills for the second time this season. The team will look to string some wins together and gain positive momentum for the rest of the season.
