On February 7th, the Denver Broncos faced the Carolina Panthers in a ferocious battle to be named Super Bowl 50 Champion and win the Vince Lombardi Trophy. The Super Bowl has been an American tradition for 50 years . Football is a fiercely loved game; some say it owns the day of the week that most games are played on; Sunday. It’s known for its intense rivalries, fierce physical combat, fanatical followers, supreme skills, and of course; the trophy and rings that await the champion at the end of the season. The season has been full of ups-and-downs on both sides of the draw. There have been teams who have experienced injuries, performed miraculous comebacks, and as always the teams who will think “so close but yet so far” as they fell short of the Super-Bowl.

While the regular season appeared to be smooth sailing for the energetic Panthers, it was quite the opposite for the Broncos. They limped through the season like a maimed horse with starting quarterback Peyton Manning dropping early in the season after playing an awful game due to foot injury. However his backup Brock Osweiler got his chance at the spotlight, and he did not disappoint. As a starter, he earned a 5-2 record keeping the Broncos on track for the playoffs. Manning did not return until the last game of the regular season when he secured a win against the Chargers, securing their number one spot in the AFC with the Patriots losing to the Dolphins.

This year’s Super Bowl 50 was touted as an arm-wrestle between the best offense and the best defense; only time would tell who came out on top. The two teams had vastly different routes to the showpiece game; the Panthers dispatched the Cardinals with consummate ease while the Broncos had a nail-biting win in the last moments of their game against the Patriots. This season, it was the new superstar Cam Newton and his team the Panthers who experienced the heartbreak of losing the championship in a 10-24 loss against the Broncos at a sunny Levi’s Stadium. As anyone who watched can see, the Bronco’s defense tore the Panthers and their much vaunted offence to pieces in a game that saw the heart of their defense, Von Miller, being awarded Most Valuable Player, with two and a half sacks and two forced fumbles which both resulted in touchdowns.

In the game the defense sacked Cam Newton six times, which is the most that the very mobile quarterback had been sacked in a game all season. Alone, Newton had three turnovers, the two fumbles forced by MVP Miller and an interception. After the game, Newton stood at the podium with his head dropped- almost in disbelief. He said, “[the Broncos] just played better than us. I don’t know what you want me to say. They made more plays than us, and that’s what it comes down to. We had our opportunities. It wasn’t nothing special that they did. We dropped balls, we turned the ball over, gave up sacks, threw errant passes. That’s it. They scored more points than us” As the old adage goes; apparently defense does win Championships.
