The team huddles up during a stoppage in play

The Bernards hockey season is beginning with a couple scrimmages this week and their first game on December 3rd. With defenseman Curtis McGriskin out for the first few weeks because of an injury he sustained during a game leaving him with a torn acl and meniscus, the team is going to have to adjust to some changes in addition to losing the seniors. Curtis said “ The team is going to learn a lot this year.” The hockey team is combined with half Somerville players and half Bernards.

Curtis also said their main weakness will be “scoring ability”. Although McGriskin is out for the next 3 months or so, he says he’s not worried because the team is in good hands with their captain, Connor O’Neill. The team is scheduled to play through the Skyland Conference, where they will be playing Watchung Hills, Hunterdon- Central, Bridgewater- Raritan, Ridge, Pingry, and Montgomery.  Connor O’Neill says “Ridge is always our biggest rival. It’s usually a close game every year but we haven’t beaten them since 2011.”

The team has six seniors, three juniors, five sophomores and three freshmen. Connor is a captain from Bernards and the other captains are seniors from Somerville. Conner says the team’s biggest strength is probably the goalie. Some of the underclassmen expected to impress are Mike Bliss, Ryan McGriskin and Trevor Clemson.
