BHS Hosts Team Campbell Gold Game

On March 28th, the BHS girls varsity basketball team played their third annual game in remembrance of Campbell Grace Hoyt. This game, also known as the Gold Game, consisted of an audience of around one thousand spectators. These spectators donated $2,200 for the Team Campbell Foundation. Samantha Mottes says, “This game was a very emotional one, and it was for a good cause. Hundreds of fans came to support both teams and The Campbell Foundation. Many people made donations and bought t-shirts. All the money that was raised went towards the foundation.” The Team Campbell Foundation Facebook page says that Campbell “never stopped wanting to help other kids fighting cancer, and always wanted to find a cure. It is in continuing Cam’s wishes that we have formed the Team Campbell Foundation.” This is a non-profit organization that has a mission “to improve the lives of families facing a childhood cancer diagnosis through awareness campaigns, funding research and psycho-social enrichment opportunities.” Campbell was diagnosed with anaplastic ependymoma at the age of three. The foundation was founded in October of 2014, two months after eight year old, Campbell Grace Hoyt, lost her battle to anaplastic ependymoma. Mrs. Whelan, the girls basketball varsity coach, has been conducting these Gold Games to help the Hoyt family raise awareness for pediatric cancer. This game was played in memoriam of Campbell as well as Connor McCadden, a basketball player from Metuchen. Connor McCadden was 16 when he passed away on December 14, 2014 after battling bone cancer. Sara Whelan says, “It was an absolute blessing to play this game for her and Connor. The team wears gold laces and gold ribbons in honor of her but playing in front of her family and in front of Connor McCadden’s was an experience I will never forget. I know that the entire team was honored to play and it was an amazing game for an amazing cause.”
