Girls Fencing gained new coaches this year, coach Jared Hammond, coach Josh Hammond, and coach Jackson Hunter. They had coached both boys and girls fencing prior to this season and were coaching both in the current season as well. Kristen Coury said “The coaches had brought a new style of coaching.”

The team practiced five days a week and had mandatory self-guided practice on Saturdays. When watching the matches it was clear that they had been practicing a lot more consistently, all the hard work had paid off in the end. Bernards girls fencing had won 13/15 of their matches.

Instead of focusing on the individual the group came together as a team. This helped them win their meets because they could learn each others weaknesses and help their teammates overcome them. Zaynaab Ellison said “I learned how to overcome fear, improvement on tactics, and I was definitely more focused this season than l was last year.” Kristen Cory also added the relationship between the grades was different than prior years and “the freshman learned a lot from the upperclassmen”. After the seniors leave, the team will still consist of valuable components because they had been trained by the upperclassmen who have taught them everything they know.

This year consisted of a lot of highlights, such as, Caitlin Buteau’s hundredth win and when the team defeated Montgomery 14-13. Bernards High School’s girls fencing had a great season this year and hope for the same success in the upcoming seasons.
